How to Lead a Prayer in Church
- Call on God — begin simply: "Heavenly Father," or "Gracious God,"
- Praise and thanks — thank God for who he is and for the week he carried you through.
- Confession — a sentence or two asking forgiveness, for all of us together.
- The people — pray for the sick, the grieving, your town, your nation, and the world.
- This service — the pastor, the sermon, the musicians, the children, and any guests.
- Close — "In Jesus' name we pray. Amen."
Read-aloud tips
- Read it out loud two or three times before Sunday. Tap Listen to hear the pace.
- Most prayers here take 1 to 2 minutes. Slow down at the commas; pause between paragraphs.
- Add one line for your own church: a new baby, a member in the hospital (ask first before naming), or an upcoming event.
- Reading from your phone is fine. The screen stays on while a prayer is open.
- It's okay to stumble. People are praying with you, not grading you.
